(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - I am a resident of San Carlos with one child attending Benchley-Weinberger Elementary School and another starting in a few years. We live in the house my wife grew up in, and she also attended Benchley-Weinberger as a child.
I would like to thank Councilwoman Marti Emerald and her Representative Chris Pearson for their great assistance in procuring a stop sign at the corner of Jackson Drive and Twin Lake which is one block from Benchley-Weinberger.
In addition, I would also wish to thank the Navajo Community Planners Inc. for their understanding that a stop sign was very much needed to allow elementary school children to safely cross Jackson Drive.
We’ve been trying to secure safe passage for our children across this intersection for over three years. I have spoken with neighbors who had requested a stop sign at the corner over 35 years ago with no success.
This stop sign would be unneeded if drivers were a little more courteous, paid even the slightest bit of attention at the intersection and were not speeding. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and there have been many near misses. This area is not a “ticket trap” as some might suggest, but enforcement was requested by local parents and the school principal because cars were ignoring the stop signs. The citations issued only go to show the total inattentiveness of drivers.
This intersection is well marked with painting on the street and “Stop Ahead” signs both east and westbound. I have little sympathy for drivers who feel inconvenienced by having to stop. My only concern is the safety of my children and my neighbors’ children.
