(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) Teachers try to teach students in a meaningful way, by pulling lessons from everyday experiences that children can understand and relate to. October 7th began Fire Prevention Week. Kindergartners discussed what to do if we ever found ourselves on fire, how to prevent fire, and how to escape safely. All of these lessons were not very meaningful at the time. We did not want to frighten the children with so much talk about fire but prevention and safety are important lessons.


October 21st brought new meaning to Fire Prevention Week. Very different from the Cedar fire in 2004, the Gage community was not directly affected. Our hearts go out to the families who lost their homes. Our entire school will be involved in an effort to support those in San Diego who are in need after this devastation. Life will go back to normal very soon for us. We hope the smiles on the faces of these kindergartners in their cute little handmade hats remind us that there is always something to be happy about.
