In February, Momentum Middle School had two very exciting events; the first was Bingo night and the second was Math Matters. Bingo night turned out to be a packed house and a lot of fun. Our 8th grade parents cooked for everyone and the school was able to remove any overhead costs. All of the proceeds benefit student fieldtrips. Math Matters was on January 31 and Momentum had about 50 fourth and fifth graders from several surrounding schools show up and participate. Our winners were Robert Quitt from Marvin Elementary, Thomas Le from Clay Elementary and Luke Patterson from Green Academic/Athletic Magnet School. Congratulations to all three of them!
Momentum Middle School is participating in a boy's basketball league at Kearny Mesa Recreation Center, and the season has just reached the half way mark. Two teams are being represented, one coached by Mr. Stevens, and the other by Mr. Capretta. Both teams are competing extremely hard each week, and continuing to improve game by game. Mr. Stevens' team, lead by eighth graders Travis Gubbe and Vincent Skalka are coming off a tough five point loss against Kearny Mesa Rec, and hold a record of two wins and two losses. Coach Capretta's team, who is captained by sharp shooting Romario Wilson, recorded their first win last Saturday, and has suffered three tough losses by a combined twelve points.
Momentum's founder, the Magnolia Foundation, had submitted petitions to open two new 6th-12th grade charter schools; one in Mira Mesa-Scripps Ranch area for 2009-10, and the other in Clairemont Mesa the following year. They will be named Magnolia Science Academy-San Diego 2 & 3. In addition, Momentum Middle School has requested an amendment in our charter to include the 9th grade for the 2009/10 school year.
