At the Fortieth Annual Awards Night at Patrick Henry High School on June 4, 2009, the Lake Murray Kiwanis Foundation and the Kiwanis Club of Lake Murray awarded two $1,000 scholarships. The recipients were Marie Barranco, who will be attending UC Santa Barbara, and Kyle Haring, who will be attending San Diego State University. 

The John Tilko Scholarships, honoring a Lake Murray Kiwanis Past President, were presented to the students the Foundation Board felt were most deserving, based on a variety of factors, including GPA and community service. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. The fundraisers the Kiwanis hold during the year are the source for these scholarships, in keeping with the club's goal of donating those proceeds back to the community. The Kiwanis thanks those who support the fundraising events; to allow the club to assist students with their higher education goals and wish them good luck and continued success in their chosen fields of study.
