(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - Early Sunday mornings at Lake Murray are people-sparse. The running population was really down on Sunday, June 5th because it was the day of the Rock 'n Roll Marathon. Runners had been training for months for the event. The surprise was that there were very good runners at the lake that day that didn't participate in the marathon. They included Ed who was called "Fast Eddie" (I don't think he is aware that I know that), Corrine, a nurse and others. Some of these runners don't do long runs, but they would tear up the marathon course if they trained with more mileage. Unless someone tells us that they are training for a marathon, it's difficult to know. The way that the lake road is positioned, we can't tell if someone is running two miles for fun or twenty miles to train.

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - "Love is above all, the gift of oneself." That is a quote by Jean Anouilh. How about, "The greatest gift one can give is the gift of oneself." "Volunteering is a gift one can give to others, and their gift comes from the heart." Or, "Time is Money." Unpaid volunteers save millions of dollars for public and non-public entities, for profit and non-profit agencies in all venues. Some people juggle work, home and children to contribute some of their time. Volunteers make their world a better place. A lot or little of what they give in time contributes to do just that... a better place.

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - Mission Trails Regional Park will celebrate its annual "Explore Mission Trails Day" on May 15 this year. It is amazing that there are people that live in areas around the park have never walked, hiked the park or visited the MTRP Visitor Center. It is also amazing that the parks' neighbors travel the earth but don't know the beauty that abounds within a few minutes of where they live. Mission Trails Regional Parks' Visitor Center is about a block from Mission Gorge Road between Jackson Dr. and Golfcrest on Father Junipero Serra Trail.

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, CA) - There were Lupines, poppies, ceanothus (wild lilac), all abloom along highway 154 in mid March when on our yearly sojourn to Solvang. Highway154 is the back road from Santa Barbara to Solvang via Cachuma Lake. Cachuma Lake is really a reservoir that the Santa Ynez River feeds into its north end. The lake is large and offers all kinds of recreational opportunities. Lake Murray walkers Joe and Hillary Hannon told me that they camp there. Years of driving on the road that over-looks the reservoir and the spectacular views of the Santa Ynez and San Raphael Mountains and I didn’t realize what goes on there.

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, Ca) -  We read that humans are hardwired to surround themselves with other humans; family and friends are part of our pod.  Knowing people for a long time but knowing little about them happens and particularly at Lake Murray where we spend lots of time. Other places where people congregate are the same. People that go to Lake Murray for an hour or two at approximately the same time each day are bound to know each other.

Charlotte and Ed Blank walk at Lake Murray. Charlotte doesn't walk every day but occasionally a group of us get together for breakfast and we talk.  We recently discovered that we both like quotes.  I read them, savor them and forget most of them.  Charlotte writes them down to peruse from time to time. A good quote is one that makes one say "Hmmm."

(Mission Times Courier, Ca) -  I was aware that I was smiling when I ran past one of the cairns that was on the Del Cerro side of the lake. Cairns can be cute little terrier dogs or rock formations that mark a trail. The little dogs weren't in formation on the trail. But rock displays often are. The rocks are placed precariously on top of one another to show hikers the way to their destination without using breadcrumbs. They are an art form and I am cheered when I see them by the side of the lake road.

Lake Murray beauty by Fred Gregory

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, Ca) -  Mornings at Lake Murray can take your breath away.  I'm not talking about the chill or running hard.  I am talking about the unbelievable sunrises.  The pinks turn to reds that turn to Mercurochrome orange and the colors cover the whole eastern sky.  I know that scientists will sometimes make disparaging remarks about particulates in the air causing the infusion of color.  But it doesn't diminish my pleasure or those around me at the lake.

(Mission Times Courier, San Diego, Ca) - September 19, 2009 was a fairly mild day considering the preceding and subsequent heat we endured.  Our collective karma must have been good.  September 19th was the I Love a Clean San Diego cleanup day at Lake Murray.
